Wayanad district was formed in 1980 by carving out areas from the districts of Calicut and Kannur. Kalpetta is the district headquarters of Wayanad district. Many indigenous tribes occupy this part of the state. Wayanad is distinct because of its variety in landscape and cool pristine weather. It is located at a height of about 700 to 2100 meters above sea level. The forests of Wayanad is believed to have been inhabited 3000 years back. Wayanad is located in the southern tip of the Deccan plateau. The vivid terrains and the dense forests, deep valleys, lofty ridges add to its beauty. The weather of Wayand is simply cool and one will certainly get recharged from inside.... Kabini river flows through Wayanad and Banasura Sagar dam is built on the Kabini river. The important places of interest in Wayanad are: Thirunelli Temple, Edakkal Caves, Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, The Jain temple, Sulthan Bathery, Pookode Lake, Kuruva Dweep, & Meenmutty falls. Tea and coffee are abundantly cultivated here. This is a place for perfect weekend getaway. Wayanad is well connected to the tourist locations like Ooty and Mysore.
